Standing With Survivors: Our Commitment to Ending Gender-Based Violence

Gender-based violence affects millions of people across South Africa and the world. At A24Group Medical Staffing, we recognise that healthcare professionals stand on the frontlines of this crisis every day. We see the urgent need for action, support, and community involvement. This November, as communities across the globe mark the 16 Days of Activism, we want to share the campaigns and resources that can help survivors and empower us all to take a stand.

Why This Matters Now?

Gender-based violence doesn't take a day off. It happens in homes, workplaces, online spaces, and communities. Healthcare workers encounter survivors in emergency departments, clinics, and during routine care. Each interaction offers an opportunity to provide support, connect someone to resources, or simply listen without judgement.

The statistics tell a sobering story, but behind every number stands a person who deserves safety, dignity, and access to help. That's why we're highlighting campaigns and resources that work year-round to support survivors and prevent violence.

Campaigns Making a Difference

Women for Change

Women for Change provides survivors with practical resources they need to rebuild their lives. The organisation offers legal support, connects women with survivor networks, and shares guidance on navigating systems that can feel overwhelming.

Visit their platform to explore resources, connect with others who understand your journey, and find practical steps towards safety and healing. Follow their work using #womenforchange and #unburythetruth to stay informed and show your support.

16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children

The South African government supports this United Nations campaign, which runs annually from 25 November (International Day of No Violence against Women) to 10 December (International Human Rights Day). These 16 days serve as a rallying point for organisations, communities, and individuals to raise awareness and demand change.

This year, the campaign focuses on creating safer spaces for women and children whilst mobilising communities to break the silence around violence. Healthcare facilities, schools, workplaces, and community centres across the country host events, distribute information, and connect survivors with services.

UNiTE 16 Days of Activism 2025 #NoExcuse

UN Women has declared this year's theme: "End digital violence against all women and girls." The UNiTE campaign highlights how online harassment, cyberstalking, non-consensual sharing of intimate images, and other forms of digital abuse harm women and girls worldwide.

Digital violence carries real consequences. It affects mental health, economic opportunities, and physical safety. The campaign encourages everyone to:

  • Learn about digital violence and its impact

  • Support survivors who experience online abuse

  • Advocate for stronger protections and accountability

  • Share resources on social media using #NoExcuse and #ACTtoEndViolence

#ONEVOICE United Against Gender-Based Violence

The Western Cape Department of Social Development launched its 365 Days of Activism campaign under the banner #ONEVOICE United Against Gender-Based Violence. This initiative recognises that ending gender-based violence requires sustained commitment beyond annual campaigns.

The programme brings together government departments, NGOs, community organisations, and ordinary citizens. It promotes prevention through education, early intervention, and coordinated support services. The message remains clear: we speak with one voice against all forms of violence.

Getting Help When You Need It

GBV Command Centre: 0800 150 150

The GBV Command Centre operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Trained counsellors provide confidential assistance and connect callers with appropriate services, including:

  • Emergency shelter

  • Legal advice

  • Counselling services

  • Medical care

  • Police assistance

Call the 24-hour Gender Based Violence National Command Centre 0800 428 428 or send a ‘Please Call me’ to *120*7867# (free) for counselling and other services, including shelter.

You don't need to give your name. The service costs nothing, and counsellors speak multiple languages. If you're in danger, call immediately. If you're supporting someone else, the centre can guide you on how to help.

Finding the Right Social Worker

Social workers play a vital role in supporting survivors of gender-based violence. They assess needs, develop safety plans, connect families with resources, and provide ongoing support. In South Africa, you can find registered social workers through:

  • Your local Department of Social Development office

  • NGOs working in your area

  • Healthcare facilities

  • The South African Council for Social Service Professions website

Don't hesitate to ask questions about qualifications, services available, and what to expect from the process.

How Healthcare Professionals Can Help?

Medical staff encounter survivors regularly, whether or not violence brought them through the door. We can:

  • Screen sensitively for signs of abuse

  • Provide information about resources

  • Document injuries thoroughly and accurately

  • Offer non-judgemental support

  • Connect patients with social workers and counsellors

  • Understand that leaving an abusive situation takes time

Your response can change someone's life. Even when immediate intervention isn't possible, providing information and showing respect creates an opening for future help-seeking.

What Communities Can Do?

Ending gender-based violence requires all of us. You can contribute by:

  • Educating yourself about the signs and impacts of violence

  • Challenging harmful attitudes and behaviours when you encounter them

  • Supporting organisations that work with survivors

  • Sharing resources on social media and in your networks

  • Checking in with friends and family members who might need help

  • Teaching young people about healthy relationships and respect

Moving Forward Together

Gender-based violence thrives in silence. When we talk openly about it, share resources, and support survivors, we create pathways out of dangerous situations. We show people they're not alone and help isn't beyond reach.

This 16 Days of Activism, and throughout the year, A24Group Medical Staffing stands with survivors. We commit to supporting the healthcare professionals who serve them and the communities working to prevent violence. Together, we can build a safer society for everyone.

If you or someone you know needs help, reach out now.
